Passive DAS Solutions

Passive Distributed Antenna System (DAS) solution is built with a combination of passive components or RF ancillaries like splitter, coupler, feeder etc. The passive solution is cost effective and widely used for covering small and medium size buildings.

The Passive DAS solution has many advantages when it comes to single operator with limited technologies. This solution is totally free from noise and active intermodulation products with less operational and maintenance cost.

Main sources for passive DAS solutions are Microcell and Repeaters.

Active DAS Solutions

Active DAS is a concept of Fiber Optic Repeater based solutions which consists of a master and remote unit. RKTPL’s multi-band, multi-technologies DAS supports CDMA, GSM900, GSM 1800, WCDMA and LTE based on customer requirements. A master unit converts the RF signals to optical and this can be connected to remote units via Fiber Optical Cable. Remote unit converts the optical signals to original RF signal. Remote unit is further connected to a passive DAS to extend the coverage to the desired areas.

RKTPL’s Active DAS offers Network Management Software to control & monitor and the software is capable of FCAPS (fault, configure, alarm, performance, security).

To meet the capacity requirements and provide seamless RF coverage inside the buildings, RKTPL emerges as the leading solution provider for Distributed Antenna System (DAS). DAS leverages the potential of multiple distributed antennas for enhanced RF coverage in subways, tunnels, hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, airports, parking areas, and high rise buildings.

RKTPL has designed and deployed DAS solutions to meet the unique needs of its customers for various in-building coverage enhancement requirements such as Metro Tunnels, Airports, Important Heritage Buildings etc. The experience of working closely with RAN OEMs and Wireless service providers enables us to continuously innovate and upgrade the DAS for customer specific coverage and capacity enhancement solutions.

Active DAS consists of three-stage system, that is,

  1. Point of Interface (POI): It’s a combining/splitting unit used to multiplex multi-technology and multi-operator signals in the network.
  2. Optical Master Unit (OMU): It converts the incoming multiplexed RF signal in to an optical signal, which is transmitted over the optical fiber to feed Remote Unit.
  3. Optical Remote Unit (ORU): It converts the optical signal into RF signal and feeds to a network of distributed antennas for broad range of coverage. The Uplink follows the route back from the mobile station to the BTS.

Under Active DAS family RKTPL offers:

  1. Fiber DAS: It boosts up the RF coverage through optical fiber network.
  2. Digital DAS: It’s an advanced version of Fiber DAS based on Base Band processing using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and supports CPRI

Fiber DAS:

RKTPL’s Fiber DAS solution consists of Point of Interface (POI) and Optical Master Unit (OMU) located at the base station site. OMU distributes the signal over dedicated fiber network to Remote Unit (RU), designed for discrete mounting in both indoor and outdoor environment. The RU distributes the RF signal to antennas over coaxial cable through splitters, couplers, and other passive components.

POINT OF INTERFACE (POI) 
Fiber DAS POI interface connects various BTS, Small cells, and Repeaters to the OMU. The POI shelf consists of different interface modules, each supporting a single band, which in turn can be connected to different carriers. POI interfaces various technologies over a wide range of frequency bands. Each interface module can be either duplexed (single port for TX/RX) or un-duplexed (separate ports for TX/RX) configuration, which is enabling connection to different BTS.

OPTICAL MASTER UNIT (OMU)
Fiber DAS OMU converts RF signal into Optical signal for transmission. It’s technologies-agnostic system and supports multi-operators with multi-technologies. At the remote end, the signals are converted back into RF for propagation in the local area. It supports low and high power multi-band, multi-technology remote units. 

REMOTE UNIT (RU)
Fiber DAS RU covers major cellular bands and technologies including GSM, DCS, CDMA, WCDMA, and LTE. Remote Unit provides an exceptionally low noise figure and lower group delay by reducing interference to BTS, and thus  ensures optimum performance and maximum throughput. The offered Remote Unit can be indoor (IP55) or outdoor (IP65) type.

Digital DAS:

RKTPL’s Digital DAS solution provides extended wireless services throughout a building or multiple buildings. It’s the most flexible, scalable, and reliable solution to address coverage and capacity needs for current and emerging wireless networks available in the global DAS market. Its architecture consists of three major components: Digital Master Unit, Digital Hub Unit, and Digital Remote Unit.

DIGITAL MASTER UNIT
The RF input from multiple BTS units is transmitted to Master Unit. It combines multiple technology inputs and converts them into a digital CPRI data stream using FGPA based DSP technique. The converted signal is transmitted through single mode duplex CPRI cable to the Hub system by using an SFP+ transceiver module to achieve higher transmission rate. The optical connectivity can be extended for eight Hub units from a single Digital Master Unit.

DIGITAL HUB UNIT
Digital Hub Unit acts as the central switching hub for the system. The digitized data stream gets distributed through CPRI connectivity to the different Digital Remote Units. Digital Hub Unit extends its optical coverage to seven different Digital Remote Units. Digital Hub Unit controls the physical ID of connected devices and provides an easy to monitor and control environment on Network Management System (NMS). Additionally, single Hub Unit can manage up to 14 different Digital Remote Units.

DIGITAL REMOTE UNIT
Digital Remote Unit is a low power multi band operational device. In Digital Remote Unit, CPRI data stream from Digital Hub Unit is converted back into RF signal and transmitted by using in-built antennas. It also has the provision of linking an external 3 dBi Omni antenna to the device for increasing its coverage area by using the cascading feature. The Digital Remote Unit can be monitored and controlled by NMS.

Outdoor Coverage Solutions

RKTPL Offers customized products and solutions to extend existing BTS coverage and capacity. These cost effective and user-friendly products are compatible with different base station equipment manufactures. These kinds of products help the mobile network operator to optimize their network without many changes in the network parameter. Capacity of some BTS sector’s in rural and sub-urban areas may not be fully utilized, by using such products, capacity issues can be managed by diverting/extending the underutilized capacity to other desired areas. This helps in maximizing the capacity utilization of the underutilized sectors of the base station.

Terrain complexities could lead to signal fading, interference, call quality deterioration and call drops within the coverage area of BTS. RKTPL’s experience helps to design and develop innovative outdoor coverage products which caters to such dynamic RF conditions.

Digital Multi-Band Modular RF Repeater

With the accelerating development of mobile communication technology, additional communications technologies and Frequency Bands are being added by Operators. Hence, telecom operators have to handle multi-Bands and Technologies simultaneously. They also face the potential issue of re-farming spectrum resources.
A standard integrated Repeater cannot easily be upgraded, wasting Operator's Repeater investments.

Fiber-Optic DAS

Analog Multi-Band Optical Transport System

Analog Multi-Band Optical Fiber transport system is designed to integrate multi-band systems and help to extend the coverage of in-building systems, long tunnel sections and large area outdoor coverage.

The Master Unit (MU) will include the POI Unit and Optical Unit. The POI is designed to handle Five Bands with up to Four Operators in each Band. All Five Bands do not have to be deployed initially. Additional Bands beyond the initial number of Bands can be added at any time simply by plugging in BTS’ to the POI and adding Band Modules in the Remote Unit.

The Optical Unit includes a Monitor Unit, 8-way Divider, Power Supply Unit, Redundant “Hot Swap” Power Supply Unit and Analog RF to Optical Convertor Unit. This System will handle up to 8 Remote Units in a Star Architecture and is expandable.

The Modular Remote Unit includes a Power & Monitor & Optical Unit, POI_1, POI_2 and RF Unit for the required Bands. As the Unit is Modular, Bands beyond the initial deployment can be added by adding Band Modules.

A fully configured System can include up to 8 Remote Units. The System can be optionally expanded to handle additional Remote Units.

Both the Master Unit and the Remote Units can housed in Optional Wall Mount Rack Cabinets. The Standard are Indoor Rack Cabinets, but IP-65 or IP-67 Wall Mount Rack Cabinets are available for Tunnel and harsh environment locations.

M-DOTS Digital Multi-Band Optical Transport System

Digital Multi-Band Optical Transport System (M-DOTS) is designed to integrate multi-band systems and extend the cellular coverage into large Public Venues, such as Hospitals, Hotels, Shopping Malls, Office Buildings, long Tunnels sections and large area outdoor coverage. 

The M-DOTS consists of a Master Unit (MU), and Remote Units (RU’s). MU consist Optical Master Unit (OMU) and Extension Master Unit (EMU). MU supports up to 48 digital optical fiber port, and each port can support up to 8 remote unit’s in cascading connection. Loop redundancy function can be supported.

M-DOTS is a cost-effective and intelligent solution that can be used in cases when optical master unit and remote unit are not located close to each other. In the downlink, OMU pick up the Multi-Band Base Station signal and covert it to digital signal, and convert digital signal to optical signal, then transport by optical fiber. In RU, digital signal will be changed back to RF signal and then amplified by the high power and high linearity amplifier (HPA), and output to the coverage area. It operating supporting all major cellular frequency bands including 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz or 2600MHz and supports all major wireless technologies include GSM, EDGE, DCS, CDMA, UMTS, LTE FDD, PCS and AWS.

Repeaters

Repeaters are used to enhance the cellular network coverage by extending the Radio Frequency (RF) signal to the areas where the required signal strength is not adequate for mobile coverage.

Indoor repeaters overcome insufficient wireless coverage in indoor areas such as office buildings, parking garages, apartment buildings, shopping malls and residential houses. Outdoor repeaters provide wireless coverage in outdoor areas degraded by geographic topologies such as mountains, valleys, dense foliage and high rise urban landscapes.

Frequency Shift Repeaters

Digital frequency Shifting Repeaters (FSR) system designed to solve problems of weak mobile signal, which can expand more coverage than RF repeaters and reduce investment for the areas where fiber optic or dedicated cable is not allowed. The Frequency Shifting Repeater system (FSR) consists of two parts: Donor Unit and Remote Unit. The Donor Unit receives the BTS signal via open air radio frequency (RF) transmission or direct couple closed to BTS, then coverts it from the working channel to transmission channel, and transmits the amplified signal to the Remote unit that will reconvert the signal to the working channel and provide signal to the areas where network coverage is inadequate.

As per the method of receiving BTS signal by the Donor Unit, two types of FSR are available:

   Cable-Access FSR: to receive BTS signal via a direct coupler closed to the BTS (Recommended)

   Wireless-Access FSR: to receive BTS signal via a Donor Antenna

It is a cost-effective and intelligent solution that solves the last mile coverage problem and up to four bands operating supporting all major cellular frequency bands including 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz or 2600MHz and supports all major wireless technologies include GSM, EDGE, DCS, CDMA, UMTS, LTE FDD. 

The design adopts SDR (Software Defined Radio) technology based upon our FPGA & DSP (Digital Signal Processing) platform. It enables on-the-fly filter & Bandwidth configure/upgrade by software without expensive hardware upgrading. Built-in individual Gain and ALC setting for each sub-band for multi-technology application (e.g. GSM/UMTS) for single or multi-operator applications.

The Repeater is connected via coaxial cable to a Donor Antenna and Service Antenna or DAS, The Donor Antenna is placed outside the building where it has access to a BTS signal, and the Service Antenna or DAS are placed in the building where they can extend radio coverage to the areas lacking coverage.
